Moldovan PM: Judiciary that does justice - priority for government's reform agenda
Chisinau, July 11. /MOLDPRES/- The update of the progress made in the justice reform process and the fight against corruption, as well as the setting of the following priorities in order to effectively reform the law institutions in our country were discussed at today's donor coordination meeting - Justice reform in Moldova: progress and next steps, hosted by the Ministry of Justice, the government's communication and protocol department has reported.
"A judiciary that does justice is a priority for the government's reform agenda and is part of the European Union accession agenda. Our country is not alone on this path. Together with all our partner states and organizations, the government is firmly committed to carrying out justice reform for the benefit of citizens", Prime Minister Dorin Recean said.
Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru thanked the donors for the assistance and expertise provided in the implementation of the Strategy on ensuring independence and integrity in the justice sector. The achievements registered by the Executive aim at adjusting the legislative framework to the constitutional amendments regarding the judicial system, the pre-vetting exercise of the members for the Superior Council of Magistrates and the Superior Council of Prosecutors, the reform of the Supreme Court of Justice, as well as the adoption of a package of legislative acts to make the human rights protection mechanisms.
"All these reforms are also included in the measures proposed by the European Commission in its Opinion on the application for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union, and 6 out of the 9 measures concern the judicial system and of the prosecutor's office, the fight against corruption, the assurance and protection of human rights. We have made significant progress in all the mentioned directions and we are glad that, after the last preliminary evaluations, the representatives of the European Union have sent us messages of appreciation for the results achieved up to this stage", said the Minister of Justice.
The head of the legal committee on rules and immunities, Olesea Stamate, said that in two years of the Government's activity, significant progress has been made in key areas of the justice sector.
The event brought together representatives of the partner countries of the Republic of Moldova, donors, experts, ambassadors and aims to assess the needs of our country for the successful completion of the reforms initiated in the justice and the fight against corruption.
