Goethe Institute to open branch in Chisinau
A branch of the Goethe Institute will be opened in Chisinau, an institution that will strengthen cultural and educational cooperation between Germany and Moldova. Culture Minister Cristian Jardan and Ambassador of Germany Hubert Knirsch in Chisinau discussed the organization of joint programs and events and consolidating collaboration between cultural institutions of both countries.
"The presence of this institution will contribute to the boosting of cultural and educational exchanges, will facilitate the organization of joint programmes and events, and will support the development of collaborations between cultural institutions of Germany and Moldova," the Ministry's press release reads.
During the meeting, the officials also discussed strengthening Moldovan-German cultural cooperation and developing joint projects in the fields of culture, cultural heritage and mass media.
Ass for the field of cultural heritage, the two officials addressed the project of consolidating and restoring the former Girls' Gymnasium from Chisinau, carried out by the Culture Ministry in partnership with the German Embassy. The project aims to preserve original decorative elements and protect a significant historical monument of the capital. Cooperation in the field of media resilience was also discussed.
Minister Cristian Jardan emphasized Germany's importance as a strategic partner of Moldova and presented the main priorities of the Culture Ministry, including the promotion of culture in regions, the new media law and the historical monuments law.
In Moldova, Goethe-Zentrum Chișinău (formerly the German Cultural Center "Akzente") operates as an officially accredited partner of the Goethe Institute, promoting German language courses and exams. Recently, in December 2025, official discussions took place on the opportunity to open a full branch of the Goethe Institute in Chisinau, which will further strengthen cultural and educational exchanges between Germany and Moldova.
The Goethe Institute (Goethe-Institut) is the official cultural institution of the Federal Republic of Germany, operating worldwide, in order to promote German culture and the learning of the German language. Its main goals include: promoting the German language through internationally recognized courses and exams (levels A1–C2); facilitating international cultural exchanges through events, educational projects and training programmes; and providing information about the contemporary cultural, social and political life of Germany.
