Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration: Issue of supplying Transnistrian region with natural gas has technical component and is not of political nature

The issue of supplying the Transnistrian region with natural gas has a technical component and is not of a political nature. At the beginning of the crisis, Moldovan authorities and European partners offered an option that remains in effect. Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Valeriu Chiveri made the statement today.

According to the official, Chișinău authorities' priority is to support all efforts so that "the population in the region suffers as little as possible."

"As you know, the Transnistrian region is outside the legal field of the Republic of Moldova. For us, it is important to support all efforts so that the population suffers less or not at all. However, given that we do not control the situation in the region, it is difficult to undertake certain measures that could influence the well-being of our citizens on the left bank of the Dniester," emphasized Valeriu Chiveri.

In this context, the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration emphasized that the financial assistance announced by the EU for the Transnistrian region "is valid and could be activated in an emergency and if accepted by Tiraspol."

At the end of August, the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) decided to designate the company Moldovagaz as responsible for supplying the Transnistrian region with natural gas until March 31, 2026. ANRE's decision states that Moldovagaz can purchase natural gas from the wholesale market in the Republic of Moldova, including through the trading platform managed by Romanian Commodities Exchange Est, but exclusively for the needs of the Transnistrian region.

According to the same decision, Moldovagaz company is obliged to establish sufficient gas reserves to cover at least 15% of the annual average consumption of household consumers, as well as enterprises and institutions that provide essential social services in the region.

Starting January 1, 2025, the Russian company "Gazprom" unjustifiably suspended the delivery of natural gas to Moldovagaz, even though there was a valid contract until 2026, leaving consumers in the Transnistrian region without natural gas and, consequently, without electricity, heating, and hot water.

In the situation created, the European Union allocated a grant of 30 million euros for the purchase of the necessary energy resources for both consumers on the left bank of the Dniester and those on the right bank. Additionally, the EU offered assistance of 60 million euros to ensure the energy needs of the Transnistrian region. The aid was refused by Tiraspol.
