New type of driving license to be issued to Moldovan citizens
The modernized driving license and a new type of provisional license will be introduced next year in the Republic of Moldova. Model 2025 was approved today by the Government.
Both licenses will feature new security and functionality elements. Among them is the printing of a QR code on the reverse side, which will enable quick authenticity verification through the Governmental Data Verification Portal.
Moreover, it is planned to expand the Restrictions information field, which will indicate if drivers, subject to certain medically justified restrictions, have the right to drive vehicles. Until now, accessing this data could not be fully accomplished due to insufficient space.
The update was necessary not only for road safety and technical security reasons but also in the context of the accession process to the European Union and adapting official documents to EU standards.
The project will come into effect on the date when the necessary technical conditions for issuing the new model 2025 driving license are met, but no later than May 31, 2026.
Currently, three models of driving licenses are used in the Republic of Moldova. The 1995 model, issued indefinitely, remains valid. The 2015 and 2019 models, issued with a validity period of 10 years, remain valid until the expiration date specified in the respective documents.
