Moldovan PM visits agricultural household in south-eastern region
Prime Minister Dorin Recean has visited the agricultural household of Dumitru and Mihai Bocancea, located in the village of Taraclia. The farmers cultivate a total area of 3,200 hectares, of which 2,900 hectares are used for cereals and 350 hectares for fruit trees.
The farmers grow wheat, corn, sunflower, as well as rapeseed and peas in favorable years. They also own orchards of cherry, plum, and apricot trees. Dumitru and Mihai Bocancea have said that, over time, they had focused on the most reliable crops, in order to provide stable jobs for people of the community. Presently, the business employs 70 people, including day workers.
PM Dorin Recean discussed with the farmers the modernization of the business, including government’s support. The household has two storage reservoirs, which they use for annual plantations and a photovoltaic park that covers over 40 per cent of energy costs. The business has also benefited from subsidies for acquiring agricultural machinery.
In the context of recent years' lack of precipitation and climate change, the owners of the agricultural household practice minimal soil tillage, which preserves moisture. They are also considering the cultivation of sorghum or hemp, which are more resilient crops.
At present, about 70 per cent of the household's production is exported to Romania, the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, Belarus and other countries, while the rest is provided for processing on the domestic market.
