President Maia Sandu has participated in the fourth edition of the Ukraine Recovery Conference, held in Rome under the auspices of Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The event brought together heads of state and government, representatives of European and international institutions, development partners and members of civil society involved in supporting Ukraine.

The head of state reaffirmed her strong support for Ukraine, emphasizing that Moldova's welfare, just like its security, was deeply connected to the stability and future of the neighboring country.

Due to its geographical position, Moldova will play an active role in the process of reconstructing Ukraine. The country is a natural corridor to the south of the neighboring country: from Odesa and Mykolaiv, to Kherson, Dnipro, and Zaporizhzhia. This means that construction materials and equipment can be brought, stored and transported through Moldova, helping to rebuild the infrastructure destroyed by war.

“Planning reconstruction while the war continues is not easy—but it sends an essential message: Ukraine is not only resisting, but is preparing to rebuild. To thrive,” the Moldovan president said at the conference.

President Sandu called on the international community to boost the support provided to Ukraine. “For Ukraine's reconstruction to take place, Ukraine must resist. And for Ukraine to resist, it needs more military support—and quickly,” the head of state stressed

In her speech, Maia Sandu also referred to the role of Moldova as a trusted security partner. “As we approach parliamentary elections and face increasingly aggressive Russian interference, we cannot afford for the 1,200 kilometers of the border with Ukraine to become a hostile frontier.”

The Ukraine Recovery Conference is organized for the fourth consecutive year; this year, it is hosted by the Italian government. Previous editions took place in the United Kingdom (2024), Germany (2023) and Switzerland (2022).
