Air Forces, Border Police of Moldova receive new powers
The lawmakers have approved, in the second reading, the draft law on national airspace security, which aims to prevent and combat threats that may affect national security, airspace integrity and people’s safety.
The new law provides concrete measures for monitoring, managing and neutralizing air risks, including the possibility for unmanned aircraft illegally crossing Moldova's border to be destroyed or neutralized by the Air Forces. In cases where interception is impossible, the Border Police will be able to deactivate these devices' command and control functions.
In cases where there is verified and confirmed information about unauthorized use of national airspace by a piloted civil or state aircraft, the Ministry of Defense will ensure airspace protection and competent authorities will collaborate to provide support to ensure the security of the national airspace.
According to the authors, the new legislative framework will significantly contribute to strengthening national security and will improve inter-institutional cooperation to protect the airspace of Moldova.
