Moldovan parliament gives green light to modernization of Marculesti Airport for passenger flights
The lawmakers have adopted a draft that provides for the modernization of Marculesti Airport, aimed at expanding its capacity for the operation of passenger flights.
The legislative draft stipulates the transfer of its Marculesti Airport’s administration to the State Enterprise, Chisinau International Airport. According to the authors, this measure will allow for more efficient coordination of activities and the investments needed for infrastructure’s modernization.
Preliminary estimates show that the investments required for Marculesti Airport to become operational for passenger flights amount to approximately 4.2 million euros.
"Considering the increasing demand for air transport, the modernization of the Marculesti Airport is an efficient solution for attracting low-cost air operators and diversifying the national airport infrastructure," the draft’s information note reads.
Located 150 km north of Chisinau, the Marculesti Airport has a runway with a load-bearing capacity superior to the one of the Chisinau International Airport, thus allowing the landing of larger capacity aircraft.
Presently, the airport conducts its economic activity by charging airport fees and providing available spaces for rent: land, hangars and other assets.
