Governor of Moldova's Gagauz autonomy remains under home arrest till sentencing

The court has extended the home arrest of the governor of the Gagauz autonomy, Evghenia Gutul, for another 30 days. The decision was pronounced by the Chisinau Court, Ciocana branch, on July 10.

The court upheld the prosecutors' request and extended Evghenia Gutul's home arrest until August 12, with the sentence in the illegal financing case of the Shor Party expected to be pronounced by August 5.

Prosecutors have requested a 9-year prison sentence for Gutul and the confiscation of over 40.9 million lei, identified as part of the illegal financing. For the other defendant, prosecutors are seeking 8 years of imprisonment and the confiscation of 9.7 million lei.

In addition to prison sentences, the prosecution has requested the prohibition of managing financial and accounting activities or being a member of a political party for 5 years, for both women.

Governor Evghenia Gutul and a former secretary from the Central Office of the former Shor Political Party are accused of knowingly accepting illegal financing of the party and an electoral competitor, from an organized criminal group, an offense committed in a protracted manner and as accomplices.

The criminal case was sent to court in April 2024, and the trial has had more  delays.
