Moldova is making progress in its process of accession to the European Union, and the provisional closure of negotiations at the beginning of 2028 is an ambitious, but achievable objective, if the country maintains the pace of reforms. This is one of the main conclusions of the European Commission’s 2026 assessment, presented by the European Union Ambassador to Moldova Iwona Piórko to Prime Minister Vasile Tofan today.

The report confirms the progress made by Moldova and places it among the four most advanced countries in the European Union accession process.

The PM welcomed the European Commission’s positive assessment, emphasizing that it confirms the results of the reforms implemented in recent years and Moldova’s progress toward its EU membership objective.

“The assessment is quite positive: the Commission places us among the four most advanced countries in the process and confirms that the reforms implemented in recent years have brought us closer than ever to our goal,” said Prime Minister Vasile Tofan.

The prime minister noted that the results achieved represented recognition of the efforts made by state institutions and society, including in the context of the challenges faced by Moldova in recent years. “This is important recognition for Moldova and for everyone who worked to achieve this result—at institutions and throughout society, including during a very difficult period,” the PM emphasized.

At the same time, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining the pace of reforms necessary for accession to the European Union: “We are pleased with the result, but we are not slowing down. European integration is our national project and depends, above all, on how well we do our work at home.”

The report on Moldova is part of the European Commission’s annual Enlargement Package, which assesses the progress of the 10 candidate and potential candidate countries for accession to the European Union. The document analyzes the reforms carried out over the past 12 months, the level of preparedness for accession and provides recommendations on priorities for the upcoming period.
