Strengthening cooperation between central banks of Moldova and Bulgaria discussed by Anca Dragu and Dimitar Radev in Sofia

Strengthening cooperation between the central banks of the Republic of Moldova and Bulgaria and leveraging Bulgaria’s experience in supporting the reforms through which the country is aligning its financial system with European Union standards were among the main topics discussed during a meeting between NBM Governor Anca Dragu and Governor of the National Bank of Bulgaria Dimitar Radev.

The officials discussed the Bulgarian central bank’s experience in the European integration process, including in the context of Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro on January 1, 2026. Its integration into the Eurosystem provides relevant practical benchmarks for modernizing financial infrastructure and connecting to European payment systems.

Anca Dragu presented the NBM’s progress in aligning its regulatory and supervisory framework with the European Union acquis. According to the NBM, the reforms aim to strengthen the resilience of the financial sector, improve risk management, and facilitate integration into the European financial market.

The NBM Governor highlighted the results of the Republic of Moldova’s participation in the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) and the development of the MIA instant payment system, which contribute to reducing costs and simplifying transfers for individuals and businesses.

The discussions also addressed the challenges posed by external uncertainties and the importance of strong institutions in managing them. The NBM Governor emphasized the role of central bank independence in maintaining financial stability for the benefit of the population and the economy.

The meeting took place in the context of the NBM Governor’s participation in the OMFIF Forum in Sofia, Expansion, Transformation, Digitalization, held on November 2–3, 2026.
