Moldovan president meets prime minister of United Kingdom
President Maia Sandu has met British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during her working visit to the United Kingdom The discussions focused on strengthening the bilateral cooperation, with an emphasis on economic partnership, the UK's support in modernizing Moldova and the active role of the Moldovan Diaspora in the development of both economies.
One topic addressed was the removal of customs tariffs for more Moldovan products in 2023, which significantly boosted exports: deliveries of plums increased 15-fold, apples - almost five times and grapes’ exports nearly tripled. The head of state expressed interest in further expanding economic ties between the two countries.
At the same time, President Sandu welcomed the agreement reached between the authorities of Moldova and the United Kingdom, allowing Moldovan citizens to exchange their driving licenses for British ones without needing to pass additional exams.
The simplified procedure for exchanging driving licenses became possible following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two governments this week. The document stipulates that, starting from August 1, 2025, Moldovan citizens residing in the UK can apply for the conversion of their Moldovan license during the first five years of residence without taking a theoretical or practical exam. Details on the conversion conditions will be available on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The discussions between the two officials also covered the continuation of British support for strengthening democratic institutions in Moldova and enhancing the state's capacity to respond to regional challenges.
President Maia Sandu's agenda will continue with an audience with His Majesty King Charles III.
