The cabinet of ministers today approved the National Tuberculosis Response Programme for 2026–2030 – a strategic document that sets out measures for the prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment and support of people affected by tuberculosis.

The document aims to reduce tuberculosis cases by 2030 through the expansion of rapid diagnosis, provision of free treatment and development of patient‑centered services.

"Tuberculosis remains one of the main public health problems. According to World Health Organization’s estimates, in 2024 approximately 10.7 million people developed the disease and more than 1.2 million died, which keeps tuberculosis as a leading cause of death. In Moldova, although the trend is downward, tuberculosis remains a serious problem, and it is important to reduce disease transmission through prevention, detection, treatment and patient‑centered support services," said Health Minister Emil Ceban.

Among the goals, there are providing free systematic screening for at least 90 per cent of people in high‑risk groups, free vaccination for at least 95 per cent of newborns and initiation of preventive treatment for at least 90 per cent of eligible people.

The document also focuses on vulnerable groups, including people in detention. Although tuberculosis incidence among vulnerable groups has decreased in recent years, it stays more than five times higher than the national average.

The programme is aligned with the national health strategy, Health 2030, the World Health Organization’s End TB strategy, and the international commitments of  Moldova.
