President of India to visit Moldova
President of India Droupadi Murmu will visit Moldova on July 20, 2026, at an invitation by President Maia Sandu. This is the first visit of an Indian head of state to the country since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Moldova and India on March 20, 1992, and it marks the opening of a new stage in the bilateral relationship.
India, the world’s largest democracy, with a population of over 1.4 billion people, is one of the world’s largest economies and has the fastest growth rate among major economies. For the Moldova, India is an increasingly important strategic partner, with which we seek closer cooperation in such areas as trade and investment, energy, information technologies, the pharmaceutical industry, health, agriculture and education.
The Moldovan-Indian relations have witnessed positive dynamics in recent years. In October 2024, in New Delhi, bilateral political consultations between the two countries were resumed after 21 years. In December 2024, Moldova inaugurated its Embassy in New Delhi – an important step in consolidating the political dialogue and promoting the country’s economic interests on the Indian market. In February 2025, India opened its market to Moldovan apples. In the energy sector, the Indian company KEC International, winner of an international tender, completed the construction of the 400 kV Vulcanesti–Chisinau overhead power line – a strategic project for the energy security of Moldova. In the same year, Moldova joined the International Solar Alliance, a global initiative launched by India together with France and headquartered in New Delhi, which opens up new opportunities for cooperation in the field of renewable energy. Over 1,400 students from India are studying at universities from Moldova, most of them at the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, forming a lasting bridge between the two societies.
During their meeting in Chisinau, the two presidents will review the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and discuss new areas of cooperation, including expanding access for Moldovan products to the Indian market, attracting Indian investments and developing cooperation in renewable energy and digital transformation.
After the meeting, President Sandu and President Murmu will make press statements starting at 11:30. Media representatives are invited between 10:50–11:10 a.m. to the Presidency building (154 Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt Boulevard, entrance from Maria Cebotari Street). Access will be provided on the basis of accreditation.
The two presidents will also open the Moldova–India Business Forum, organized by the Investments Agency on the occasion of the visit. The event will bring together representatives of the business communities from both countries – the Indian delegation includes around 30 businesspeople – with the aim of boosting trade and investment cooperation in such areas as infrastructure and construction, manufacturing, information technology, renewable energy, the pharmaceutical industry and the agri-food sector. Media representatives are welcome at the opening of the Forum, which will take place at the Radisson Blu Hotel. Details on participation can be got from the Investments Agency.
The visit's agenda also includes a meeting between President Droupadi Murmu and the Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu and members of the parliamentary friendship group, as well as a meeting with the Indian community of Moldova.
