Police of the Republic of Moldova is celebrating 35th anniversary today, and on this occasion, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu sent a message of appreciation to the institution's employees, highlighting its essential role in protecting citizens and state.

The Prime Minister noted that over three and a half decades, the police officers in the Republic of Moldova have consistently worked to build an institution that guarantees the rule of law, public order, and the protection of citizens' fundamental rights.

According to Alexandru Munteanu, the Police enjoy increasing trust from society today, as a result of the concrete actions and professionalism demonstrated by its employees.

"Police is a symbol of our sovereignty – they defend it daily, with dedication, professionalism, and courage, even in the face of unprecedented hybrid threats in the history of the Republic of Moldova," stated the Prime Minister.

The official expressed gratitude towards the employees of the General Police Inspectorate for their daily efforts, and also towards their families, who provide support and understanding.

Additionally, Alexandru Munteanu paid tribute to the police officers who lost their lives while performing their duties, emphasizing that their sacrifice contributed to defending not only order and law but also the sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova.

Today, festive events will be organized across the country, during which the achievements of the employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) will be appreciated.

Minister of Internal Affairs Daniella Misail-Nichitin emphasized that the profession of a police officer means more than just a job – it is a commitment to protect lives, defend justice, and build a safer and more equitable society.

"Today, besides the National Police Day, it's also the day of a great team's success, which will continue to successfully face future challenges. The activity of the police officers began with a sacrifice – defending the independence and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova. We will always pay homage to those who formed the foundation of the Republic of Moldova's statehood and who sacrificed their lives for it. Over these years, you have continued the fight against organized crime, ensuring public order and the security of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, and have intervened whenever necessary. With each action, the police contribute to strengthening democracy and bringing the country closer to European values and standards. I am confident that, together, we will build with great responsibility the European path of the Republic of Moldova," stated Daniella Misail-Nichitin.

General Police Inspectorate head Viorel Cernăuțeanu mentioned that over 35 years, the institution has constantly evolved and played an essential role in protecting citizens and public order.

"The National Police has undergone significant reforms, adapting to new realities and strengthening its operational and professional capacities. The work of police officers means responsibility, sacrifice, and decisions made in critical moments. Each intervention, each prevention action, and each life protected reflects the dedication of those who wear this uniform. I deeply appreciate the efforts of colleagues across the country, the support of their families, and the contribution of our institutional and international partners, who have supported the modernization process of the National Police. We have the obligation to continue reforms, to act transparently and professionally, and to strengthen society's trust. The Police remain a pillar of public safety and a trusted partner of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova," said Cernăuțeanu.

The National Police Day will be marked by flower laying at the monument of fallen police officers in front of MAI headquarters. Flowers will also be laid at Grieving Mother monument within Eternity Memorial Complex, at the monument of fallen police officers in Valea Morilor park, and at the monument of Stefan cel Mare.

After the declaration of sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova on June 23, 1990, the process of establishing its own national system in the field of internal affairs began. Thus, on September 13, 1990, the Government in Chișinău adopted a decision that provided for the creation of the Department of Police and district police sections. Subsequently, on December 18, 1990, the Parliament adopted the Law on Police. Immediately after its adoption, an extensive process of restructuring, modernization, and establishment of internal affairs bodies began, with the Police of the Republic of Moldova becoming an institution based on democratic principles, serving the citizens and intended to defend the fundamental values of society.

An important page in the history of the National Police is the defense of the independence of the Republic of Moldova in the Dniester War of 1992. On the battlefield, 89 police officers lost their lives.

On December 27, 2012, the new Law on Police Activity and Police Officer Status was adopted, which came into force on March 5, 2013. According to the new provisions, the institution was reorganized into the General Police Inspectorate, specialized subdivisions, and territorial subdivisions, tasked with defending the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens through activities of maintaining and ensuring public order and security, preventing, investigating, and discovering crimes and offenses.
