VIDEO // Railway of Moldova enterprise conducts technical testing of Prut-2 – Falciu railway segment

A team of specialists from the Railway of Moldova state enterprise (CFM) has conducted technical testing of the Prut-2 (Moldova) - Falciu (Romania) railway segment.

According to CFM, the testing aimed to verify the technical condition of the railway infrastructure and confirm the functionality of the recently rehabilitated segment, including the railway bridge over the Prut River.

“That bridge was closed, and today we are talking about the restoration of the third railway connection between Moldova, Romania and the European Union,” said Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea.

The last freight train ran on this sector in 1989, and passenger transport was last conducted in 2009.

“The experimental run is the first concrete step towards resuming railway traffic on this segment after a period of more decades of inactivity,” said CFM.

The rehabilitation of the railway infrastructure, including the railway bridge and the Prut 2 (Moldova) and Falciu (Romania) border stations, is carried out under the Memorandum of Understanding on the resumption of the Prut-Falciu railway connection, signed by CFM and the Romanian National Railway Company on April 14, 2025.

The Cantemir-Falciu railway segment, approximately 4 kilometers long, has a strategic position at the border between Moldova and the European Union. The rehabilitation of the railway bridge and the border stations Prut 2 and Falciu is part of a broader effort to modernize the cross-border transport infrastructure. The resumption of railway traffic on this segment will open new economic opportunities for Moldova.
