CEC and TikTok to cooperate to combat information manipulation in Gagauzia elections
The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) and TikTok platform will continue their cooperation to promote reliable electoral information and combat disinformation in the context of the regional elections scheduled for November 15 in the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia.
According to the Commission, the areas of cooperation were discussed in Bucharest during a meeting between CEC Vice President Pavel Postica and Simion Dorin Rusu, TikTok’s Government Relations and Public Policy Manager for Romania, Hungary and the Balkans.
The discussions focused on TikTok’s policies and tools for combating false or misleading information, including content generated with the help of artificial intelligence, as well as identifying content that violates regulations on political and electoral advertising. The participants also examined ways in which the CEC can use the platform for voter information and education, as well as mechanisms for reporting attempts at manipulation and other threats to election integrity.
In the context of the elections, TikTok has implemented measures to protect the integrity of public discourse, identify fake accounts and counter attempts at manipulation. The platform will also direct users to official sources of information and provide media literacy resources to help them recognize and verify potentially false information.
The elections for the position of governor (bashkan) of Gagauzia and for the 35 seats in the region’s People’s Assembly will take place on November 15. The electoral campaign began on October 16 and will end on November 13.
