European cooperation, regional energy security at center of Moldovan foreign affairs minister's address in Berlin

Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi has taken part in Berlin in the panel discussion titled, Strengthening Resilience – What Ukraine’s Energy War Means for Europe, held on the sidelines of a high-level international conference.

In his speech, the official highlighted the importance of European cooperation and solidarity in strengthening regional energy security, in the context of the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Mihai Popsoi also referred to the impact of the regional situation on Moldova, including the country’s experience in managing energy crises triggered by its historical dependence on a single natural gas supplier.

The deputy PM noted that, in recent years, Moldova had made significant progress in reducing energy vulnerabilities by eliminating its dependence on Russian gas and accessing international markets, which has contributed to increasing the resilience of the energy system.

“Any support provided to Ukraine is equally support for Moldova and for the security of the entire region. Five years ago, our country was a classic case of energy dependence and vulnerability. Today, Moldova is an example of resilience, still in the process of consolidating its energy independence, but with significant progress in this direction,” said Mihai Popsoi.

The official reviewed the main measures implemented by the authorities, including synchronization with the European electricity network ENTSO-E, the development of interconnections with Romania, the expansion of renewable energy production capacities and the diversification of supply sources.

At the same time, Mihai Popsoi praised the support of external partners, such as the European Union, the Energy Community and the United States of America, emphasizing their role in strengthening the energy security of Moldova and in advancing the process of integration into the European energy market.

He reiterated Moldova's commitment to continue its European path and to remain a reliable partner for the European Union and Ukraine.
