Secretary General of the Government Alexei Buzu and the Deputy Secretary General Alexandru Iacub today held discussions with members of the European Confederation of Intermediate Local Authorities (CEPLI). The talks focused on the reform of local public administration in Moldova, strengthening administrative capacities and making use of European experience in this field.

Head of the State Chancellery Alexei Buzu emphasized that the reform of local public administration was necessary, in order to overcome administrative fragmentation and to create stronger municipalities capable of providing better services to citizens. The official said that over 87 per cent of mayoralties of Moldova had fewer than 3,000 inhabitants, and the own revenues of many local authorities are very low, which limits their development capacity.

“Through this reform, we aim to build local and regional administrations that will become real engines of development for communities. Citizens deserve a better standard of living,” said Alexei Buzu.

During the meeting, the Concept of the local public administration reform of Moldova was presented. The participants discussed the steps needed to consolidate mayoralties and how European experience can help the authorities of Moldova in this process.

CEPLI representatives referred to the implementation of local public administration reform in more European states and the role of local authorities in communities’ development. The sides also discussed opportunities for cooperation between the State Chancellery, the Association of District Councils of Moldova and CEPLI.
