LIVE // Moldova hands over Chairmanship of Committee of Ministers of Council of Europe to Principality of Monaco

The Republic of Moldova is today handing over the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to the Principality of Monaco. The event is taking place during a festive ceremony held at the Palace of the Republic.

After the handover ceremony of the presidency, Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Principality of Monaco Isabelle Berro-Amadëi, as well as Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset will hold a joint press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On 14 November 2025, Moldova assumed the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. Our country will hold the position for a period of six months, until 15 May this year. This is the second time the state has held this responsibility, the first Chairmanship was held in 2003.

The Committee of Ministers is the main decision-making body of the Council of Europe, responsible for implementing the objectives of the organization. The member states are represented by the ministers of foreign affairs and by the permanent representatives to the Council of Europe.

The Council of Europe is a European intergovernmental organization, created on 5 May 1949. It currently has 46 member states and its official seat is in Strasbourg, France. The main objectives of the Council of Europe are the protection of human rights, pluralist democracy and the rule of law, identifying solutions to the problems facing European society, and strengthening democratic stability in Europe by supporting political, legislative and constitutional reforms.

The Republic of Moldova became a member of the Council of Europe on 13 July 1995.
