Women MPs Platform launched in Chișinău

Women MPs Platform of the 12th Legislature was launched today within the parliament, an initiative aimed at strengthening cooperation among parliamentarians in promoting women’s rights, gender equality and social policies.

The announcement was made by deputy speaker Doina Gherman, who highlighted the evolution of women’s representation in Moldovan politics. According to her, in the first Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, women accounted for only 4% of all MPs, while in the current legislature their number has reached a record level of 41 women deputies.

“Today we launched the Women MPs Platform in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, 12th Legislature. In the first Parliament of the country there were only 4% women, and today we have a record number of women’s representation in Parliament – 41 women deputies,” said Doina Gherman.

The official also reviewed a series of reforms promoted in recent years to support gender equality and women’s rights. These include the introduction of the double quota in the Electoral Code, the right of women to work while retaining their maternity allowance, the possibility to share childcare leave, the development of alternative childcare services in the workplace, the equal pay law, and the regulation of flexible working hours.

At the same time, she mentioned the tightening of sanctions for sexual harassment, digital violence, and stalking.

According to Doina Gherman, the European integration of the Republic of Moldova also entails the strengthening of women’s rights and equal opportunities.

“Even if we represent different political forces, we are united by common objectives: combating violence, protecting children, supporting mothers, and ensuring the active participation of women in public life,” the MP emphasized.

New leadership and Coordinating Council are to be elected at the next meeting of the platform.
