President begins visit to Strasbourg
President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu begins on May 19 her external agenda with a visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, where she will hold a series of meetings with European officials and leaders of the main political groups. On the same day, the head of state is to be decorated with the European Order of Merit, a distinction established by the European Parliament on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration.
According to the Presidency, the head of state will hold discussions today with President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, as well as with representatives of several European political families, including the European People's Party, the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, the European Conservatives and Reformists, Renew Europe and the Greens/European Free Alliance.
The visit takes place in the context of the plenary session of the European Parliament and is focused on promoting the interests of the Republic of Moldova, strengthening partnerships for security and development, and supporting the country’s path toward accession to the European Union.
Also today, Maia Sandu is to be awarded the European Order of Merit, an honor established by the European Parliament on the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. Other laureates include former Polish President Lech Wałęsa, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and former Vice-President of the European Commission Viviane Reding.
In the coming days, the head of state’s agenda will continue with a working visit to the Netherlands and participation in the GLOBSEC Forum conference in Prague, the Czech Republic.
