Roads of Moldova to be mandatorily assessed every five years
The road safety across the entire network of roads of Moldova will be mandatorily assessed at least once every five years, according to a draft law adopted by the parliament in the first reading today. The initiative aims to identify dangerous sections in advance and prevent road accidents, by establishing a mechanism for periodic evaluation of infrastructure, in the context of aligning national legislation with European Union standards.
The draft was presented at the plenary meeting by State Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Nicolai Mindra. He who specified that the amendments complemented the road infrastructure safety management mechanisms established by the law adopted in 2023.
According to the official, the new provisions introduce periodic road safety assessments for the entire network or roads in operation, so that the authorities can identify high-risk sections in time and intervene before accidents occur.
“This is an assessment to be carried out by the road administrator, in order to examine how safe the entire road network is. Thus, investments in road infrastructure safety will be directed to the road sections where they can generate the greatest impact in relation to the resources invested,” said Nicolai Mindra.
The state secretary also said that the draft established the obligation for the national road administrator to create and manage an online voluntary reporting system. Through this system, road users will be able to report incidents, deficiencies and other problems that may affect road safety.
Additionally, the draft sees that, after the law is adopted, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development will approve the certification procedures for road safety auditors. The new provisions are to enter into force on January 1, 2028.
The draft law was approved with the votes of 67 MPs.
