Moldovan Central Electoral Commission approves timetable for new local elections, referendum due on 17 May 2026

The electoral period for the new local elections and the local referendum on the dismissal of a mayor, which will take place on 17 May, will start on 16 February 2026. The Central Electoral Commission (CEC), at today’s meeting, approved the Timetable for organizing and conducting the ballot.

The document sets out the actions necessary for organizing the new local elections and the referendum, the implementation deadlines and the responsible institutions, according to the competences of the actors involved in the electoral process. The timetable is to be sent to electoral bodies, public authorities and other relevant entities for their information and implementation.

According to the decision, the election campaign will start on 17 April 2026.

New local elections will be held in the village of Costesti and the commune of Rusestii Noi, central Ialoveni district, the village of Mascauti in central Criuleni district, the commune of Saratenii Vechi, central Telenesti district, the town of Taraclia, southern Taraclia district, the municipality of Orhei, the village of Topala, southern Cimislia district, the village of Copceac, Autonomous Territorial Unit of  Gagauzia, the village of Plop, northern Donduseni district, and the commune of Frumusica, northern Floresti district.

At the same time, a local referendum on the dismissal of the mayor will take place in the village of Hasnasenii Mari, northern Drochia district.
