VIDEO // Over 70% of Moldova's electricity consumption covered by renewable sources; Education minister: “Less dependence on imports and greater security for citizens”

Over 70 per cent of Moldova’s domestic electricity consumption today was covered by renewable energy sources. Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu has made statements to this effect. He emphasized that “the data indicate a lower dependence on imports and greater security for citizens.”

According to the official, Moldova is currently proving that it can be more energy independent than ever before.

“Over 70 per cent of the energy consumed today comes from renewable sources – clean, safe and more affordable energy for people. Almost 40 per cent of the energy consumed is produced here at home from renewable sources, while another 36 per cent of consumption was covered by imported green energy. Last year, on the same period, we produced only 25 per cent locally. This means less dependence on imports, greater security for citizens and more stable invoices,” said Dorin Junghietu.

The minister stressed that, in just five years, renewable energy capacity had increased more than 12 times – from 77 MW to over 1 GW.

“This is one of the fastest energy transitions in the region. We are investing in solar panels, wind energy and modern storage systems, so that Moldova can have a safer and stronger energy system. Step by step, we are building a Moldova that produces more energy at home,” Dorin Junghietu underlined.

In the summer of the last year, the country reached a historic milestone in green energy production. Thus, on August 23, at 12:00 p.m., the country’s electricity consumption was fully covered by local production from renewable sources.

The authorities are setting ambitious goals in this field, with strategic targets established for 2030: at least 27 per cent energy from renewable sources in gross final energy consumption and at least 31.2 per cent electricity from renewable sources in gross final electricity consumption.
