Head of State signed decree granting citizenship of the Republic of Moldova to Mr Traian Băsescu

The Presidency of the Republic of Moldova

President Maia Sandu today signed the decree granting citizenship of the Republic of Moldova to former President of Romania Traian Băsescu, as a sign of gratitude for the consistent support he has provided to our country.

"President Băsescu has supported the citizens of the Republic of Moldova with all his strength and unconditionally, regardless of the governments in Chișinău. As Mr Băsescu knows how much struggle has taken place on this land to preserve our identity, the Romanian language, and to break away from the Soviet past so that we can move forward — towards a European future," said the head of state.

At the same time, the granting of citizenship comes to remedy an injustice done in the past to Traian Băsescu.

"Mr Băsescu, from today you are not only our brother, but also our fellow citizen. We are waiting for you at home," the President noted.
