Head of State Maia Sandu was welcomed by President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola at the institution’s headquarters in Strasbourg, where Maia Sandu will today be awarded the European Order of Merit, a distinction granted to personalities who have significantly contributed to promoting European values and strengthening the European project.
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, reconfirmed the institution’s support for the European path of the Republic of Moldova.
“My message today, stated in the clearest possible terms, is that the European Parliament will continue to support Moldova in every way,” the official declared.
At the same time, Roberta Metsola congratulated Maia Sandu on her nomination for the European Order of Merit.
“It is an honour for us to recognise your leadership by awarding you the European Order of Merit. I have had the honour to witness over the years your determination, clarity and steadfastness. Your commitment is not only shaping Moldova, it is shaping the rest of Europe as well. Despite Russia’s constant interference and attempts to destabilise your country, you remain firmly anchored in our shared democratic values. This is due to the resilience of your people and your calm, clear and principled leadership,” said Roberta Metsola.
Maia Sandu said she is “deeply honoured to be nominated for the European Order of Merit,” noting that “this distinction belongs to the people of Moldova — to those who chose Europe at the ballot box, to those who defended this choice when it was not easy, and to those who carry out the difficult daily work of reforms because they believe in a better future.”
At the same time, the head of state stressed that the Republic of Moldova is ready to open negotiations for all clusters in the process of European integration.
“We want to continue moving forward. Moldova is ready to open negotiations for all clusters. Both the European Commission and the Council have confirmed that we are ready. Step by step, Moldova is fulfilling the commitments it has made. A credible, merit-based accession process requires effort and commitment from both sides,” Maia Sandu underlined.
Maia Sandu is paying a visit today to the European Parliament. During this visit, the head of state will hold meetings with the political groups of the European legislature to discuss the progress made by the Republic of Moldova and the next steps on the path to joining the European Union.
At the same time, Maia Sandu will be awarded the European Order of Merit, a distinction established by the European Parliament on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, granted to personalities who have significantly contributed to promoting European values and strengthening the European project.
