President: Our commitment - to finalize EU accession negotiations by late 2027
The Republic of Moldova aims to finalize the negotiations for joining the European Union by late 2027. This would mean that our country has to make enormous strides on this path in the coming years. Head of state Maia Sandu made the statements who emphasized the importance of this autumn's parliamentary elections for maintaining the pro-European path of the Republic of Moldova.
"Our commitment or our working plan now is to finalize the accession negotiations by late 2027. This would mean making steps, but you have also seen the commitment of the current enlargement commissioner, who has the same goal for Moldova, to conclude the negotiation process by 2028. So, it's not impossible. I really believe, taking into account the circumstances we are in, and the progress we have demonstrated in recent years, as we have taken steps that are appreciated in Brussels," said Maia Sandu on a television show.
The head of state mentioned that it is essential for the Republic of Moldova not to miss this chance of European integration. In this context, Maia Sandu highlighted the importance of the parliamentary elections in the fall for continuing the country's pro-European path.
"It's very important not to miss this chance of European integration, which now doesn't seem like a 10 - 20 years horizon for me, but in the next four years. We have a real chance to achieve this, but for that to happen, we must first have a pro-European majority in the next Parliament. After that, there is sure work to be done, but the most important objective we need to achieve in the near future is to ensure this majority," the president said.
Maia Sandu warned that Russia "will try to influence the election results, and Kremlin's stake is to change the country's leadership with people they can control."
"We see what great efforts Kremlin is making to influence the election results in the Republic of Moldova. We saw last year this unprecedented interference, and it is very clear that this year too, Kremlin will try to influence the election results in the Republic of Moldova, and Kremlin's stake is to change the country's leadership with people they can control," Maia Sandu said.
The president remarked that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova are the ones who must decide the country's future.
"Moldovans must decide for Moldova. This means being a sovereign state. And all citizens must understand this. When you sell your vote, it means you are selling your country, and this is very serious. We all need to understand how great the damage is for the country, for our future, how great the danger is," the head of state concluded.
Parliament decided yesterday that the parliamentary elections will be held on September 28.
