VIDEO // Commissioner: Integration of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine into EU can directly contribute to regional stability
The integration of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine into the European Union can directly contribute to regional stability, democratic governance, and the ability to withstand future shocks. The message was delivered by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos at the third edition of the Black Sea Security Conference, held today in Chișinău.
Marta Kos emphasized that the Black Sea occupies a central place in Europe’s Security Strategy. According to her, without a secure Black Sea, there can be no secure Europe.
“The region is home to EU member states, future member states, as well as important partners with whom we share the interest of keeping this vital artery for trade, energy flows and food exports safe,” Marta Kos stated in a video message delivered to the conference.
The European Commissioner for Enlargement argued that Russia’s war against Ukraine has fundamentally transformed the region and has led to the adoption of a firmer and more strategic European stance.
“We are investing in the resilience of our partner countries, including today’s host, the Republic of Moldova, which is facing hybrid threats and external pressure. In this regard, EU enlargement represents a strategic investment in security,” the official said.
Marta Kos stressed that “the integration of Ukraine and Moldova into the European Union directly contributes to regional stability, democratic governance and the capacity to cope with future shocks.”
“Our connectivity agenda in the region serves the same security objectives. It provides us with alternative energy infrastructure, transport corridors and digital links,” the Commissioner added.
In conclusion, Marta Kos stated that the EU fully supports the efforts made within the framework of the Conference held today in Chișinău “to build a comprehensive and future-oriented security vision for the Black Sea region.”
The Republic of Moldova is hosting today the Security Conference in the Black Sea region, under the aegis of the International Crimea Platform. The meeting is co-organized by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, with the support of the European Union.
The Black Sea Security Conference is at its third edition. The event continues the dialogue launched in Bucharest in 2023 and in Sofia in 2024, in the context of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine.
