Government to change mechanism for setting transport fares

The Government is set to amend the regulatory framework for setting road transport fares in order to allow rapid interventions in situations caused by rising fuel prices. Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR) Vladimir Bolea made the statement today .

According to the official, the process of endorsing the draft is practically completed, and the authorities are preparing to adopt a Government decision that will provide the National Road Transport Agency (ANTA) with the necessary intervention tools.

“Today we have completed receiving all the opinions from the state institutions responsible for issuing them and, most likely in the near future, we will compile all the proposals and even hold an extraordinary Government meeting to adopt the decision,” said Vladimir Bolea.

The minister specified that the new mechanism will allow fares to be adjusted according to the evolution of diesel prices, based on calculations carried out by ANTA.

“A viable instrument is being established for ANTA to intervene when such price increases occur. ANTA will calculate what the transport fare can be, based on the price of diesel,” the deputy prime minister stated.

At the same time, the official mentioned that the authorities are in constant dialogue with transport operators in order to avoid disruptions to regular services.

“We have multiple meetings with transport operators. They have been consulted and will start maintaining their regular routes to avoid blockages caused by the rise in fuel prices,” said the head of MIDR.

Vladimir Bolea emphasized that the proposed measures aim to maintain a balance between the economic interests of operators and the need to provide services to the population.

“Taking into account the national interest, of the people who use this transport, we must find solutions that do not harm either citizens or economic agents,” Bolea stated.

The official added that the new regulatory framework will include rapid intervention mechanisms for exceptional situations, including force majeure, in order to prevent blockages in the sector and to support the activity of transport operators.
