Defense Minister attends Black Sea Security Conference

The Republic of Moldova must invest constantly in strengthening air defense and in modern technologies, in the context of security risks in the region. Minister of Defense Anatolie Nosatîi made the statement during the Black Sea Security Conference held in Chișinău.

The official emphasized that the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine has profoundly changed the security architecture in Europe and has highlighted the vulnerabilities of the states in the Black Sea region.

“The recent airspace violations by Russian drones demonstrate the need for continued investment in air defense and in modern technologies, in order to protect citizens, critical infrastructure, and the sovereignty of the state,” the minister stated.

According to him, although the Republic of Moldova is a neutral state, neutrality does not offer absolute protection in the face of current threats. In this context, strengthening defense capabilities and developing external partnerships are essential.

The minister noted that the National Army is currently undergoing an extensive modernization process, carried out with the support of international partners, and that our country is consolidating its role as a security provider through participation in international missions under the auspices of the UN, the European Union, and NATO.

At the same time, the official drew attention to hybrid risks, including disinformation campaigns, propaganda, and the illegal presence of Russian troops in the Transnistrian region, which directly affect the security of the Republic of Moldova.

Meanwhile, the defense chief highlighted that the adoption of legislation on airspace security has enabled the development of air defense capabilities, and cooperation with external partners has been expanded in the field of technical expertise and the exchange of best practices.

The official reiterated that the Republic of Moldova’s strategic objective remains accession to the European Union and integration into the European security and defense architecture, an objective that can be achieved only by strengthening national capabilities and through international cooperation.

“We are stronger and safer when we act together,” concluded the Minister of Defense.

The Republic of Moldova is hosting today the Security Conference in the Black Sea region, under the aegis of the International Crimea Platform. The meeting is co-organized by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, with the support of the European Union.

The Black Sea Security Conference is now in its third edition. The event continues the dialogue launched in Bucharest in 2023 and in Sofia in 2024, in the context of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine.
