Foreign Minister: Moldova supports completing steps to operationalize Special Tribunal for crime of aggression against Ukraine and establish compensation commission
The Republic of Moldova firmly supports the creation of international mechanisms to ensure accountability for the aggression against Ukraine, including the operationalization of the Special Tribunal and the establishment of a Compensation Commission. Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi made the statements at the Black Sea Security Conference held today in Chisinau.
“ The Republic of Moldova remains a strong supporter of completing the necessary steps to operationalize the Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine and to establish the Compensation Commission. These are essential priorities for our country in exercising the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe,” Mihai Popșoi emphasized.
According to the official, Ukraine is fighting for the idea of a free nation and for the sovereign right to decide its own future.
“Every day that Ukraine holds the front line, it keeps Russia away from our borders and from the rest of Europe – and it deserves all our support,” Popșoi said.
He reiterated that the Republic of Moldova shares a 1,200-kilometer border with Ukraine.
“During the last four years of uninterrupted war, Russian missiles and drones have continued to violate our airspace, landing in people’s yards and on rooftops, endangering their lives. Since February 2022, the Republic of Moldova has stood firmly by Ukraine. Over one million Ukrainians have crossed the border of the Republic of Moldova, and approximately 100,000 have chosen to stay. The citizens and Government of Moldova have offered help without hesitation, because we understand that Ukraine’s survival is inseparable from our own,” the official noted.
The minister highlighted that support for Ukraine remains a strategic priority for the Republic of Moldova, including in the broader regional security context marked by risks and instability.
At the same time, Popșoi underlined that international efforts must be strengthened through cooperation between states and international organizations, in order to ensure peace and stability in the Black Sea region.
The conference in Chisinau brought together officials and experts in security, defense, and foreign policy, and was dedicated to analyzing the challenges in the Black Sea region and identifying solutions to strengthen regional security. The meeting is co-organized by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, with the support of the European Union.
The Black Sea Security Conference is now in its third edition. The event continues the dialogue launched in Bucharest in 2023 and in Sofia in 2024, in the context of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine.
