President's message to Moldovan citizens from European Parliament rostrum

President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu delivered a strong appeal to citizens from the European Parliament rostrum, on the eve of an election she considers decisive for the country's future.

“Ladies and gentlemen, allow me now, from this house of European democracy to address my citizens on the eve of decisive elections,” the head of state began her speech.

She reminded Moldovans of the nation's democratic resilience over the past decades.

“Let us be proud we have built a vibrant democracy and have maintained it for three decades, even when some tried to silence or destroy it. We have faced many trials and have endured. Every time, we emerged stronger,” said Maia Sandu.

At the same time, the head of state drew attention to the current threats that endanger Moldova's independence and stability.

“Today our independence and peace are once again being tested. Interferences in our elections, illegal external funding, campaigns of lies, cyberattacks, paid protests, tactics to sow hatred among people. These are the methods by which attempts are being made to stop Moldova on its European path,” the president noted.

The message to the citizens was one of mobilization and unity.

“It is up to us whether these pressures will succeed in stopping us or, on the contrary, make us more united and determined. Last year, we showed the whole world that we can stand firm, through voting, against much larger forces,” said Maia Sandu.

The president urged citizens to make the decisive choice for the country's European future.

“Now we must take the decisive step: to choose a Parliament that will lead Moldova into the European Union. This is our responsibility. Moldova's future depends on the courage and unity with which we will go to vote,” the head of state emphasized.

At the end of her speech, Maia Sandu thanked the MEPs for the support.

“Honorable members, I thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak to you today and for standing with Moldova on our European path,” the president concluded.

Maia Sandu's speech was preceded by a strong message of support for the European integration process announced by President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola.
