Beware of deepfakes: Authorities warn of fake video featuring Prime Minister

Moldovan authorities have flagged the emergence of a fake video created using artificial intelligence, depicting Prime Minister Dorin Recean. The content, shared on platforms such as Facebook and YouTube, was promoted as a paid advertisement and aims to spread fake information on energy tariffs, according to government spokesperson Daniel Vodă.

“Please be cautious: if you see announcements featuring the Prime Minister or other officials, always verify whether they appear on official state institution channels,” Daniel Vodă said.

The official also explained several ways to recognize a deepfake.

“It's about lip movements that don't match the voice; facial expressions appear rigid or unusual; the voice has unnatural pauses or accents,” he said.

Authorities urge the public not to be fooled by such fakes and to always verify the source of information before sharing it.
