Moldova hosts regional meeting on electricity markets and energy transition

This week, the capital of the Republic of Moldova is hosting a regional meeting on electricity markets and energy transition, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The event brings together representatives from 13 countries, including Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Latvia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland and Turkey.

At the opening of the meeting, Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu highlighted that the Republic of Moldova became part of the European energy market along with Ukraine in 2022, and integration continues through major infrastructure projects. They include the development of cross-border interconnections with Romania and the expansion of production capacities from renewable sources.

“In late July 2025, the total installed capacity reached 784.09 MW, representing an increase of 204.7 MW compared to the end of 2024. 545.61 MW come from photovoltaic installations (70% of the total), and 214.58 MW from wind (27%). These results mark significant progress, but the Republic of Moldova must continue the development of energy balancing capacities to support the green transition,” Junghietu said.

The meeting in Chișinău will support the advancement of energy transition processes and strengthen regional cooperation for a safer and more sustainable electricity market. The event serves as a platform for dialogue and exchange of best practices between states, exploring solutions for sustainable energy mixes, including nuclear options, and contributing to the strengthening of institutional capacities in the region.

The event takes place under the technical cooperation project RER2018, aimed at supporting the development of national energy strategies and the implementation of climate commitments in line with the Paris Agreement. The project provides assistance for achieving Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and developing Integrated National Energy and Climate Plans.
