President warns European Parliament about threats to democracy in Moldova

President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu delivered a speech today in the plenary session of the European Parliament, and emphasized the importance of protecting democracies against external threats and highlighted the crucial role of the elections at the end of this month.

“Madam President, dear Roberta Metsola, honorable members of the European Parliament, thank you for this invitation. It is a great honor to speak in this house of democracy on behalf of the people of Moldova. Today, I would like to focus on the growing threats to our democracies – and on how we can defend them together. Because none can defend itself alone,” Sandu said.

Referring to the parliamentary elections on 28 September, the president emphasized.

“On 28 September 2025, Moldova will have the most decisive election in our history. The result will determine whether we strengthen ourselves as a stable democracy on the path to the European Union – as a secure neighbor of Ukraine and a security provider for the Union – or if Russia destabilizes us, pulls us away from Europe, and turns us into a threat to Ukraine’s southwest border and Europe’s eastern border,” Sandu said.

The head of state mentioned that Moldova’s stability and security are directly related to the region's stability: “Our stability is your stability. Our peace is Europe’s peace.”

The speech took place in front of President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola and members of the institution, being a call for European solidarity and support for the protection of democracy in Moldova.
