VIDEO // Minister of Economy: Diaspora wants to return and contribute to Moldova's economic development
Diaspora wants to return and contribute to economic development, which will allow us to speed up the economy, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Digitalization Doina Nistor said.
The official talked about her meetings with Moldovan citizens from the diaspora, highlighting that more and more of them not only return home but also wish to invest, open businesses and bring new technologies.
According to Nistor, the diaspora involvement in various economic sectors, from tourism and agriculture to construction and infrastructure, represents a major potential for the economic growth of the Republic of Moldova.
“I was deeply impressed by my discussions with the diaspora. I was in Rezina with diaspora members, and we traveled our tourist routes. You should know I have two discoveries regarding the diaspora. First and foremost, the diaspora wants to contribute. Many citizens from the diaspora are either returning or have already returned, or want to return. What do diaspora citizens want? They want to open businesses here,” said Nistor.
The Minister also emphasized the benefits brought by the diaspora.
“The diaspora brings us new technologies. The diaspora brings us new trade relations. The diaspora brings us new knowledge in the areas they invest in. In which areas have we seen interest and investments already? I mean especially tourism, where in every district I find a member from the diaspora saying they have returned, are opening a rural guesthouse or investing in small businesses, bakeries, agro-food. We also have many investments in agriculture and that makes us happy,” the official mentioned.
Doina Nistor further explained how the diaspora can support the construction and infrastructure sector.“I was pleased to discover the diaspora investing in construction. I see perspective, even for building infrastructure. They have the necessary skills, have worked in the construction field, and want to help us build roads, repair schools, kindergartens, bridges. Today I talked to a diaspora member who worked in Israel for five years and opened a construction company in the north of the country. We discussed with the diaspora how we can help them develop their businesses,” she said.
The Government of the Republic of Moldova has created several programs to support diaspora citizens who choose to return home and invest. Among them are PARE 1+2, which offers grants and consultancy to entrepreneurs, and Start for Youth, aimed at stimulating the entrepreneurial spirit of returning youth. There are also specific programs for women entrepreneurs, tourism development, as well as initiatives to involve the diaspora in cultural and educational projects. Furthermore, the Diaspora Relations Office offers a return support guide, with information about funds, employment, and professional training. So far, these programs have supported hundreds of businesses, facilitated significant investments, and contribute to the integration of the diaspora's experience and knowledge into the national economy.
