President Maia Sandu today honored the courage of the Hungarian people, 70 years after the 1956 anti-communist Revolution. The official is visiting Budapest alongside other heads of state and government, at the invitation of Prime Minister Péter Magyar.

She emphasized that in October 1956, Hungarians took to the streets to demand their freedom and the right to determine their own destiny, without dictates from Moscow.

„Kremlin responded with force: Soviet tanks entered Budapest. Thousands of people were killed, while hundreds of thousands were forced to flee their own country. But the people’s desire for freedom proved stronger, and Hungary eventually regained its freedom. We, too, lived under the same domination, which is why the Hungarians’ ideal of freedom from 1956 is close to us,” Maia Sandu said.

The head of state noted that Hungary is now a member of the European Union, a community where people live freely and safely.

„The Republic of Moldova is following the same path, with the support of the member states. Freedom is hard-won and must be carefully preserved. We choose to preserve it within the European family,” Maia Sandu remarked.

This is President Maia Sandu’s first visit to Hungary. During the visit, the head of state will hold meetings with senior officials. The discussions will focus on bilateral relations, including economic cooperation, the Republic of Moldova’s European path, and regional security.

The two countries signed a strategic partnership declaration in 2020, providing for Hungary’s support for the European integration of the Republic of Moldova and the development of economic cooperation.
