Victory Day, Europe Day to be celebrated in Moldova by string of events
Moldova marks two important events, Victory Day and Europe Day, on 9 May. We commemorate the sacrifice of those who fought for peace and we also celebrate the values that unite us on the European continent: freedom, solidarity, respect for each life. The spokesperson for the government, Daniel Voda today made statements to this effect. He emphasized the importance of marking May 9 with humanity and without politics.
“On May 9, we honor the memory of those who paid the price of peace and, at the same time, we celebrate Moldova's path towards a united European family, consolidated by common values. It's important to commemorate May 9 with humanity and without politics, as there are two significant meanings associated with this day. May 9 is about remembering a victory against a fierce war and about the values that unite us on the European continent,” said Daniel Voda after the cabinet meeting.
He emphasized that, May 9 morning, the country's leadership would join citizens at the solemn ceremony at the Eternity Memorial, in order to mark 80 years since the victory over Nazism.
“This day is about commemorating the 56,000 Moldovans who never returned home from World War II. Each family lost a son, a daughter, a parent, or a grandparent at that time. They dreamed of peace and died, so that we could live in freedom across the continent and throughout the world. Our duty is to maintain the peace for which they sacrificed themselves. This is the true legacy we must pass on,” stated Daniel Voda.
Commemoration events for veterans will be organized throughout the country.
“Moldova is a free country where we honor with dignity the Victory Day and the memory of the fallen. No one forbids this commemoration. Our call is simple and sincere: to cherish peace, to show gratitude to those who fought for it, without politicization, with humanity and unity,” spokesperson for the government stressed.
Also on May 9, on Europe Day, the traditional European Town will be organized in the National Assembly Square. Activities will start at 13:00.
“The European Village opens its doors to people of all ages. Several diplomatic missions will be present. Ministries, government agencies will also provide useful information about their activities, as well as interesting presentations of joint projects we carry out with European partners. It involves presenting over 57 European projects, which support Moldova such in areas as economic development, education, infrastructure and health,” said Daniel Voda.
May 9 will ends in PMAN with a concert featuring several artists from Moldova and abroad.
Europe Day will also be celebrated throughout the country. On May 17, the European Town will reach Causeni, and on May 9-31, the European Film and Culture Festival will take place, bringing the public screenings, concerts and shows in various cities in the country, including Balti, Ungheni, Cahul, Orhei.
Daniel Voda informed that several political parties had asked for space for activities related to May 9.
“The authorities' position is that law enforcers, those who are well-versed in managing such situations, should prioritize ensuring the smooth running of these events and actions. With effective coordination with the organizers, I'm sure that these actions will be carried out efficiently,” said the government’s spokesperson.
He emphasized that the central message on behalf of the authorities was that May 9 should pass without politicization, but with humanity, correctness and freedom. “We are a free country and we should express our positions, including civic ones, in conditions of the law,” added Daniel Voda.
