Emergency services overwhelmed: over 2,700 people assisted in last 24 hours

In the last 24 hours, ambulances have been on constant alert, responding to more than 2,700 emergency cases nationwide. Data from the Ministry of Health show that pre-hospital emergency medical service teams were called out 2,716 times, including for 506 children. After first aid was provided, almost every second patient – a total of 1,248 people – required transport to hospital for further medical care.

Most calls were related to respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, as well as traumatic and neurological emergencies. Thus, ambulances intervened in 587 cases of respiratory conditions, 557 cardiovascular emergencies, including six acute coronary syndromes, 390 traumas and 267 neurological pathologies, of which 33 were strokes. At the same time, medical teams provided first aid following 11 road accidents, in which 17 people sustained various injuries; 15 of them were transported to hospital.

Interventions were complicated by bad weather conditions. In 13 cases, ambulances encountered difficulties in moving due to icy roads in several districts of the country. In most situations, support from rescuers of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations was required, and in two cases, ambulances were freed with the help of local residents. Also, during the day of January 26, an emergency medical team assisted a home birth, with the mother and newborn later transported safely to the maternity hospital.

Hospitals also reported a high influx of patients, especially with injuries. The Institute of Emergency Medicine registered over 300 visits, most caused by falls and accidents, and several patients required surgical interventions. Children’s hospitals likewise recorded dozens of presentations, most injuries having occurred in the street, against the backdrop of slippery road surfaces.

By 9:30 a.m., the 112 emergency service had received over 400 calls, of which 171 concerned ambulance interventions for people who had fallen or suffered injuries. On January 26, there were 357 ambulance calls related to falls and accidents caused by black ice.

Due to the icy conditions, schools in the municipality of Chișinău temporarily suspended the activity. For the second consecutive day, pupils did not attend classes. According to the decision of the city authorities, classes will resume online.
