Moldovan president conveys message on World Autism Awareness Day

President Maia Sandu today conveyed a message of solidarity on the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day. The head of state urges Moldovans to show more empathy towards people who perceive the world differently.

The official emphasized that, when people offer understanding and support, everyone can find their place and grow at their own pace.

“Today, we mark World Autism Awareness Day. For some, the world is discovered in details that others overlook and silence can sometimes say more than words. There are different ways of communicating, learning and feeling, and each of them tells a different story. When we offer understanding and support, everyone can find their place and grow at their own pace. I urge you to be more patient and more present, through every gesture and every word,” Maia Sandu said.

According to the Health Ministry, approximately 1,817 people diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders are under medical supervision in Moldova, of whom about 1,684 are children. Specialists note that the real number could be higher, as not all cases are diagnosed and access to assessment and treatment services stays limited, especially in rural areas.

At an estimated level, in Moldova between 1 in 100 and 1 in 150 children may have autism spectrum disorders, in line with international trends.
