Moldova's experience with sub-granting as tool for social cohesion at regional level promoted by EcoContact at UNDP conference in Tirana

EcoContact Association brought to the forefront the experience of the Republic of Moldova in using sub-granting as a tool for social cohesion, during the UNDP learning laboratory Managing the political dimensions of social cohesion in Europe and Central Asia, held in Tirana, Albania, on September 29–30, 2025.

The organization was represented by Irina Cojocaru, grant manager, who showcased how sub-granting programs support local initiatives and foster collaboration among civil society organizations. According to her, small locally funded projects not only meet community needs but also contribute to building support networks and strengthening trust between citizens and institutions.

The event, organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), brought together international experts, representatives of civic organizations, decision-makers, and development partners from across the region.

'The agenda focused on current issues such as restrictions on civic space and their impact on society, the effects of polarization and misinformation, technological risks to civic organizations, the role of youth, and the integration of gender perspectives in social processes. The case studies presented included examples from Poland, Colombia, Cyprus, Slovakia, and Argentina, demonstrating how various states manage civic and democratic challenges. Through our contribution, the experience of the Republic of Moldova was highlighted as a good practice example, showing that sub-granting can turn local initiatives into engines of social cohesion and community resilience,' explains EcoContact.

The laboratory concluded with a joint call for strengthening regional networks, active youth involvement, integrating gender perspectives, and protecting civil society organizations in the digital era.
