Silence day in Moldova on September 27: any electoral agitation forbidden before parliamentary elections

September 27 is the "day of silence" in Moldova, the day before the parliamentary elections due on September 28. During this period, any form of electoral agitation is prohibited under the law. The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) warns that conducting electoral campaigns on Saturday and on the day of the vote represents an infringement and is sanctioned according to the Electoral Code.

"On this period, candidates are not allowed to appear on television or radio shows. At the same time, local public administration and advertising broadcasters, owners or managers of fixed or mobile devices are obliged to remove electoral advertising materials. The ban does not apply to information already posted on the internet," the CEC said.

Thus, continuing electoral agitation by media, electoral competitors or citizens attracts administrative sanctions: a fine of 40 to 60 conventional units for individuals and a fine of 100 to 150 conventional units for legal entities.

On the last day of the campaign, CEC President Angelica Caraman conveyed a call to the society, urging both electoral contenders and voters to comply with the law. She emphasized that everyone who noticed irregularities must report them immediately to the authorities. Among the targeted infringements, there are cases of forbidden electoral agitation, attempts to bribe voters, organized transportation of voters and other actions contrary to the legislation.

CEC Vice President Pavel Postica said that the Commission members would also meet today to examine a number of complaints submitted. The meetings will not be broadcast live, but will be recorded and published immediately after the election concludes.

On September 28, citizens of Moldova are called to the polls to elect the new composition of the parliament, which will be active for the next four years.
