Moldovan president says judges who fear files have no place in system

The justice reform stays the most important priority for Moldova and the process of purifying the system must continue to the end. These statements were made by President Maia Sandu has made statements to this effect at the show, In Context,  on Moldova 1 TV channel.

"I believe the signal for justice was clear. Those who hoped that something would change after the elections and they could return to what many of them have been doing for three decades, this is no longer possible. And they have no choice; they must start working correctly," emphasized the head of state.

Sandu noted that, even though important steps had been taken, the reform was not complete and the vetting remains in place:

"The vetting remains in place. We must necessarily continue until the last person in the system. And in the meantime, those who have already gone through vetting and those who have no problems to go through vetting, because they are honest people, should prove correctness. I don't even say courage, correctness. There are judges who still have integrity problems and need to go through the Evaluation Commission, so we should not delude ourselves that, if we have seen two or three completed cases and correct decisions issued, then justice works and we don't care what happens there. No. We must continue the cleaning process to the end."

According to the president, the resistance of some judges in the face of pressures shows that change is possible, but those who fear complicated files have no place in the system.

"Because you can't delay files just because you want to. Because it’s a complicated file and you fear one thief or another. If you're afraid, you need to leave the system. But if you remain in the system, you have to work on the file that you were given. In this campaign, we have seen also models of resistance in the judicial system. Yes, certainly, as thieves tried to use the justice system too," Maia Sandu stressed.

The head of state emphasized that Moldova's European integration directly depended on the success of justice reform:

"We have an obligation to carry out this reform to the end, because European integration cannot happen if we do not complete the justice reform."
