Role and involvement of National Bank of Moldova in European Integration

The intensification of cooperation in the European integration of the Republic of Moldova, with a focus on the role and involvement of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) in the path was analyzed in Brussels during discussions between NBM's Governor Anca Dragu and Gert Jan Koopman, Director-General of the Directorate-General for Enlargement and Eastern Neighborhood (DG ENEST) of the European Commission.

The meeting between the two officials took place on the sidelines of the Vienna Initiative 2025 Forum, and the agenda included topics regarding the alignment of the regulatory framework to EU standards, technical assistance opportunities offered by DG ENEST, as well as strengthening the independence of the central bank.

“The proactive dialogue we have with the European Union supports our efforts to modernize the financial sector and advance on the path of European integration. Implementing the EU acquis into national legislation and carrying out reforms are strategic priorities for the NBM. These reforms directly contribute to the development of a sustainable, more competitive, and resilient economy and, ultimately, to improving the quality of life for citizens,” emphasized the NBM Governor.

During the meeting, the Growth Plan for the Republic of Moldova was also discussed, along with the process of harmonizing the financial framework with European standards and steps for connecting the Moldovan banking sector to the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA).

The delegation of the National Bank of Moldova, led by Governor Anca Dragu, participated in the Vienna Initiative Full Forum 2025, held from September 29–30. The event brings together high-level decision-makers, central bank governors, and international experts, constituting a forum for discussions dedicated to strengthening financial stability and integrating capital markets in emerging economies.
