Moldovans settled in Quebec, Canada to be able to receive social benefits

Citizens of the Republic of Moldova who have worked in Quebec will be able to receive social benefits. This will be possible after the Cabinet approved today the signing of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the Government of Quebec in the social security.

Based on the document, Moldovan citizens are to benefit from old-age pensions, disability pensions caused by general health conditions, pensions and allowances for disability resulting from work accidents or occupational diseases, as well as survivor’s pensions or other benefits established in accordance with the provisions of the agreement.

“This agreement will allow for the establishment and payment of old-age pensions, disability pensions, survivor’s pensions, as well as many other social benefits related to work accidents or occupational diseases. An important element of this agreement, as with other social security agreements, is that if a person works in Canada or in Quebec for several years and also works in the Republic of Moldova, these periods of work are added together in order to establish the respective pension,” Minister of Labour and Social Protection Natalia Plugaru said at the Government meeting.

According to statistics, about 15,000 Moldovan citizens live in Quebec, who will be able to benefit directly from the provisions of the Agreement.

“The agreement with Quebec joins the long list of social protection agreements that the Republic of Moldova has signed with other states. Through these agreements, every citizen enjoys social rights, regardless of where they work,” added Natalia Plugaru.

So far, the Republic of Moldova has signed social security agreements with 20 states, 18 of which have entered into force and are applicable. These are: Romania, Bulgaria, Portugal, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Austria, Estonia, the Czech Republic, the Kingdom of Belgium, Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, Germany, Turkey, Belarus, Italy, Greece, Spain and Latvia.
