Orthodox Christians honor Saint Apostle, Evangelist John on October 9

The old-style Orthodox Christians today celebrate Saint Apostle and Evangelist John, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ and the author of fundamental New Testament writings, including the Gospel of John, three Epistles, and the book of Revelation.

In the Christian tradition, Saint John is known as the Apostle of Love, due to his essential messages: "God is love" and "God is light". The feast reminds of the apostle's life full of faith, which ended at an advanced age, around one hundred years, and of the miracles related to his tomb.

Born in Bethsaida, Galilee, son of fisherman Zebedee and Salome, John and his brother James were called in Scripture "sons of thunder", recognized for their strong faith. John was present at key moments in Jesus' life, including the Last Supper and at the Cross, receiving the mission to take care of Mother of God. He was also entrusted with exploring the empty tomb of the Savior.

According to tradition, on the Christian feast day marked with a red cross, believers should avoid household chores, washing clothes or conflicts with one another.
