Earth Day marked in Moldova by calls for action, investments in green future

Earth Day, marked annually on April 22, takes place with the title, Our Power, Our Planet, and highlights the role each person plays in protecting the environment. On this occasion, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu urged the society to act responsibly: “Energy security does not only mean reacting in times of crisis, but also long-term responsibility,” the prime minister emphasized at the cabinet meeting.

The PM pointed out the direct connection between environmental protection, energy security and people’s well-being, in a context where climate and economic challenges require sustainable solutions.

“Today, we mark Earth Day, a good moment to reaffirm that energy security does not mean only reacting in a crisis, but also long-term responsibility and the rational use of resources. We remain focused on stability, protecting citizens and ensuring their well-being. This is what we work for,” said Alexandru Munteanu.

According to the Green Transition Opinion Barometer, carried out with the support of the EU and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Moldova, humanity is ready for change: citizens want ecological solutions, but they must be supported by accessible and modern infrastructure.

“The European Union is responding to this need through strategic investments in renewable energy, waste management and energy efficiency. We are facilitating green choices, so that a clean environment becomes a simple and natural reality for each citizen. On Earth Day, we are reminded that the way we choose to protect nature today determines our health tomorrow,” reads the message of the Delegation of the European Union to Moldova.

According to Earthday.org, collective involvement – from individuals to institutions – is essential for reducing the negative impact on the environment and promoting a sustainable lifestyle.

Earth Day has gone beyond being a simple symbolic observance, becoming a global event dedicated to education and civic engagement. Every year, institutions, organizations and authorities carry out various activities – from tree planting and cleanup campaigns to educational projects and public awareness initiatives.

The first edition took place on April 22, 1970, in the United States, and is considered the starting point of the modern environmental movement. The initiative belonged to Senator Gaylord Nelson, inspired by a major ecological disaster that occurred off the coast of California. Earth Day is marked in over 190 countries around the world.
