Investments in development of sport in Moldova: modern infrastructure, increase in number of people engaging in sports activities

The authorities plan, in the coming years, to develop educational sports infrastructure by building or modernizing at least 10 multifunctional sports complexes, increasing the number of centers dedicated to preparing national teams for participation in national and international competitions, and encouraging more children to enroll in sports schools. The goals have been set in the Implementation Programme of the Sport 2030 Development Strategy for the years 2026–2028, approved by the government today.

The Sport 2030 Development Strategy defines the directions of action for the sustainable development of the sports sector in Moldova. It focuses on expanding access to physical activities for all population groups, improving the quality of physical education in the education system, backing performance sports and promoting a movement culture as an essential element of a sound lifestyle. The document plays a central role in underpinning the Implementation Programme, providing the strategic framework needed to achieve the national objectives set for the 2026–2028 years.

According to the draft’s explanatory note, it will have a positive impact on physical education and sports, contributing both to their development and to achieving higher performances in elite sports, as well as to increasing the number of people in the general population who adopt a sound lifestyle.

Among the goals set by the authorities, there is the ensuring, by 2028, of a 20-per cent increase in the number of pupils and students systematically involved in sports activities, by modernizing at least 50 sports facilities in school and university settings, a 30-per cent increase in the share of people who regularly practice physical exercises to maintain their health and raising the number of performance athletes to 10,000, compared to about 6,000 athletes presently registered in national sports federations.
