PHOTO // Union Highway A8 enters design phase on territory of Moldova

The main actions required to launch the design phase for Section 4 of the Union Highway – A8, which includes the construction of the first 5 kilometers of motorway on the territory of Moldova, have been established at a bilateral working meeting between the authorities of Moldova and Romania.

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea, together with representatives of the National Roads Administration and the National Road Investment Company of Romania, discussed the implementation of the design and construction contract for Section 4 of the Union Highway – A8.

During the meeting, the project team responsible for managing the contract on the Moldovan side and coordinating activities among all the institutions involved was designated.

Director General of the National Roads Administration, Stefan Popa, noted that the completion of the Union Highway – A8 is a strategic project for both states, which will contribute to the development of transport infrastructure and to strengthening the economic ties between Moldova and Romania.

“The construction of the ‘Union’ Highway – A8 is a project of strategic importance for Moldova and Romania, with long-term benefits for the development of transport infrastructure, the consolidation of economic relations, and the bringing closer of citizens on both banks of the Prut. We are providing all necessary institutional and technical support for the efficient implementation of the contract,” said Stefan Popa.

Within the project, Moldova participates as a partner in implementing the component carried out on its national territory. This includes design services, getting the necessary approvals and permits, as well as executing construction works on the Moldovan segment.

The contract provides for the construction of 15.5 kilometers of highway, 14 bridges and overpasses, two tunnels, and two road interchanges on the territory of Romania, as well as the construction of the first 5 kilometers of highway in  Moldova.

The value of the contract is 3.57 billion lei, and the financing is ensured through the European programme, Security Action for Europe (SAFE).
